ABILENE - The ACU women's basketball team is ranked No. 2 in the first NCAA Division II South Central Region ranking of the season, the highest the Wildcats have been ranked in the region since the 1997-98 season.

The Wildcats are 20-4 under first-year head coach Julie Goodenough and are ranked right behind Colorado Mesa University, which is 20-1 on the season and ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Just behind the Wildcats are the Mustangs of Midwestern State at No. 3, followed by Metro State (Colo.) of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Texas-Permian Basin of the Heartland Conference.  ACU's LSC rival, Tarleton State, leads the second 10, checking in at No. 6 in the first poll of the season.  The TexAnns are followed by St. Mary's at No. 7,  Colorado State-Pueblo at No. 8, Incarnate Word at No. 9 and Colorado-Colorado Springs at No. 10.

The top eight teams in the poll announced March 10 will earn a spot in the NCAA post-season tournament, something ACU hasn't played in since the 2008-09 season.

ACU is enjoying its finest season in years as the Wildcats try to win their first outright Lone Star Conference regular-season championship since the 1997-98 season.  ACU leads the LSC with two weeks left in the season and is trying to win the title and earn the No. 1 seed for the LSC Post-Season Tournament, March 6-9 in Allen.

ACU's 20 wins this season under Goodenough are the program's highest win total since the 2004-05 team went 20-10 and reached the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament.  The 20 regular-season wins are the most in a regular season since the 1998-99 squad posted a 21-6 regular season record on its way to a Lone Star Conference championship and a final record of 24-7.

And Goodenough's 20 wins so far this season are the second-most of any ACU head coach in their first season in program history behind the 26 Wayne Williams won in 1997-98.
