Flames could be seen near and far right in the heart of the Key City last February.

The historic building, formerly known as the old Matera Paper Building, became engulfed in flames one Monday evening. Since then, the intersection of South 1st St. and Oak St. has not been the same.

The old building was constructed and finished in 1907 as a very popular grocery company. Yet, after the Matera Paper Company moved out, it sat empty for several years.

Since last year's fire, cleanup has been initiated through stages. Bricks from the old building have been sent to other preservation projects across the state of Texas due to the demand of these materials.

While a decision on what to place next in it's location has not yet been made, it will still be remembered as one of the most long standing and historic buildings within the Key City.
