McM Women Plows Through OPSU, 81-67

GOODWELL, Okla. - Yesterday's snowstorm forced McMurry University's women's basketball team to wait an extra day to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State University, but it proved worth the wait, in an 81-67 road rout. The War Hawks improved to 10-13, while the Aggies fell to 4-19.
McM led wire-to-wire in moving into the double-digit column in victories. The War Hawks' team shot a blistering 61 percent from the field (28-46) for the game, including converting 50 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc. The team was 21-of-26 (81 percent) from the free throw stripe.
The win by McMurry also gave head coach Dr. Veronica Snow's team its third season-series sweep of a Heartland Conference team (also taking two this year from both St. Edward's University and Texas A&M-International University previously).
But the real different came in the rebounds category, where McMurry was very "Windex-like," cleaning off the glass by a margin of 34-to-17 more caroms than the Aggies.
McM also dominated the inside game with a 30-14 advantage for points in the paint. Likewise, the War Hawks held a 12-5 cushion on second chance scoring. The Aggies forced McMurry into 24 turnovers (compared to their 16 miscues), converting those into nearly a third of their offense (22 points) in the game.
In the opening period, McMurry looked anything but cold after being confined by the snow in Goodwell, scoring the first six points of the ball game and leading 8-2 on a Tory Salazar jumper at the 17:34 mark.
OPSU would tally the next two buckets to cut the War Hawks' lead to 8-7. However, that's as close as the host Aggies would be the rest of the afternoon.
By the 9:14 mark of the first half, McM had a double-digit lead - 24-14 - after Rikeita Thomas canned a pair of free throws. The visitors kept their foot on the gas the balance of the period, eventually putting OPSU in their rear-view mirror by 21 points at the intermission, 45-24.
McMurry held serve in the second half, with all 13 of the War Hawks' roster players scoring in the game and playing at least six minutes (10 players with double-digit minute totals). The Aggies never got closer than 14 points to McMurry in the final 20-minute segment.
Thomas and Collins had 16 points each to lead McMurry's efforts. Wilson and Bridget Dorn each added 11 points. Thomas, a point guard, also topped the team in rebounds with eight and assists with four.
Collins corralled seven boards and had a blocked shot. She hit 7-of-10 from the field.
The War Hawks will play back-to-back games for the first time this season since late November (at the West Texas A&M tournament), when they face UT-Permian Basin on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in Odessa.
