Merkel And Highland Girls Head To State

By: David Robinett
Updated: February 25, 2013
A pair of Big Country girls teams are going to the state basketball tournament this week. The Merkel Lady Badgers were expected to get to Austin by most in the state, and they got the job done.

The Lady Badgers are ranked 2nd in the state and were #1 for most of the season. Merkel's 37 wins is 4 better than any other team in the state tournament in Class 2A, and they are the only team with just 1 loss. Merkel opens the tournament bright and early at 10am on Friday against #5 Poth.

This is Merkel's 1st appearance down in Austin. This is Poth's 13th trip to Austin.

The Highland girls are in the Class A Division 2 state tournament. The Lady Hornets seemed to come out of nowhere to advance to their 1st state tournament appearance.

They are riding a 20-game winning streak into their state semifinal on Friday. That streak will be tested on Friday.

The unranked Lady Hornets are playing the top ranked Saltillo. Saltillo is in the state semi's for the 1st time since 2001.

Highland and Saltillo play in the 2nd Class A Division II game. They meet on Friday at 1:30 at the Erwin Center in Austin. The state championship game is Saturday night at 7.
