A Florida man is in jail after deputies said he robbed a wheelchair-bound man and then pushed him into traffic.

Sonny Leon Abreu, 24, is charged with attempted murder, robbery, abuse of a disabled adult, petty theft and animal cruelty.

Investigators said Jose Mojica told them he was at the Shell Gas Station on West Irlo Bronson Highway in Kissimmee when he saw a man, later identified as Abreu, watching him withdraw money from an ATM.

Mojica tried to leave the area, but Abreu caught up to him near the Budget Inn and pushed his wheelchair into oncoming traffic, a news release said.

"When the guy caught up to him, he pushed him out of his wheelchair," said an Osceola County detective translating for Mojica. "He fell out of his wheelchair and he was able to take his wallet."

Officials said Abreu then left the area with $240 of Mojica's money.

Mojica had a small dog in a carrier which had a broken leg when the wheelchair tipped over, authorities said.

"The dog tried to defend me and the bad guy went ahead and kicked my dog," said Mojica.
