Abilene Regional Control Tower Weathers the Sequester

By: BCH News Staff
Updated: March 7, 2013
When the FAA began preparing for sequester cuts, they announced that certain airports might be subject to furloughs or cuts in staff for air traffic control.

Abilene was one of the airports listed that might be subject to either fewer employees working overnight shifts, or cuts in overnight shifts altogether.

You may remember that the air traffic control tower is the most recent addition to the Abilene Regional Airport, with the ribbon cutting just under a year ago.

The airport says that the $21 million structure shouldn't see any major changes other than a reduced number of employees working the overnight shift.

The new air traffic control tower replaced the previous one that was close to 60 years old.

The updated tower usually houses around 30 employees.
