The following is a release sent out from Animal Control in the City of De Leon:

On March 6, 2013 a skunk was killed at 149 North Mohon Street. It came into that neighborhood from the railroad tracks at the dead end of North Comanche Drive.

The skunk was killed and the head was submitted for testing at the Texas Department of State Health Services Laboratory in Austin, Texas on the same day. Doctor Michael Burke, Veterinary Medicine, contacted Eddie Palmer, the Local Rabies Control Authority, and was also contact by the Texas Department of State Health Services Region 2 offices in Abilene, Texas.

Please be aware of wild life in / around your area. Do not approach or walk up to wild life that is known to carry rabies. These wild animals include raccoons, foxes, coyotes, bats, and skunks.

If you trap one or see one, please contact your local law enforcement for proper disposal. If you have pets, such as a dog or a cat, please be sure that the rabies vaccination is recent and if you are not sure, contact your local veterinarian. Rabies vaccination in dogs and cats is required by law and is your first line of defense against the rabies virus.
