The annual Abilene Citizen's Police Academy started this evening. It's the 21st year for it at the Abilene Police Department.

For the next 7 weeks class members will get hands on experience behind the scenes with each division of the department. They will see how detectives process crime scenes, learn about weapons and even get to shoot one.

Chief Stan Standridge says after it's over he sees, what he calls, a paradigm shift in the class.

"Their perspective was this but after 8 weeks of intense relationship and learning they completely change their perspective as to how the Abilene Police Department provides services to this community," says Chief Standridge.

About 30 people are currently enrolled in this years Academy.
