Driver's Body Crushed in Fatal Accident

Updated: December 3, 2008
A driver's body was crushed instantly when his car flipped over a concrete guard into Elm Creek.

Abilene Police arrived at the scene at 5:30 PM.

Police say a male driver in a red SUV ran onto the metal guardrail near the 4700 block of Southwest Drive.  According to witnesses, he was traveling westbound at a high speed around sunset.

Officers believe the sun might have impaired his vision as he approached a curve.

"The driver was wearing a seatbelt, but sometimes that's just not enough, speed can kill, and in this case it did," says Sgt. Doug Wrenn of the Traffic Divison, "very simply put, this vehicle went off the roadway and launched into a creek in a matter of seconds."

The car had an out of state license plate.  Police think the driver was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base.  If that is the case, the accident would be the second fatal crash in a single week that involves a member of Dyess Air Force Base.  Abilene Police are now working with the base to confirm his identity and affiliation.

There is no word on whether or not alcohol was a factor in the accident.  A toxicology report is still pending.
