Abilene Nursing Homes Rated Low

A new government rating system gave some local nursing homes one star out of five:
  • Hendrick Skilled Nursing Facility (Abilene)
  • The Oaks at Radford Hills (Abilene)
  • Mesa Springs Healthcare Center in (Buffalo Gap)
  • Holiday Hill Inc. (Coleman)
  • Merkel Nursing Center
  • Clyde Nursing Center
  • Anson Healthcare Center
  • Bluebonnet Nursing Home (Albany)
  • Community Care Center of Stamford
  • Nolan Nursing and Rehabilitation (Sweetwater)
The new system, released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, rates homes for their  quality, staffing and health inspections, then assigns them an overall score.

The full report found that, overall, nonprofit nursing homes provided better care than their for-profit rivals.  Nineteen percent of nonprofit facilities got five stars, compared with 9 percent of for-profits.

Three local nursing homes received five stars:
  • Windcrest Alzheimers Care Center (Abilene)
  • Wesley Court Methodist Retirement Community (Abilene)
  • Homestead Nursing and Rehabilitation of Baird
