"It's disheartening. We're certainly pulling for both [Krystal Limones and Mazie Paulino]," admits Sgt. Doug Wrenn.
The pictures from the early morning crash show it all. A drunk driver, Clifford Cartwright, crashed his truck into a concrete barrier throwing Krystal Limones, a Cisco Junior College student, through the windshield and severely injuring Mazie Paulino, a Dyess Airman.
"[Limones] is currently on life support. I was talking with her family earlier and we're certainly pulling for her recovery, but it's looking pretty critical at this point."
It was a busy night for Sgt. Doug Wrenn and many of Abilene's Police Officers who took to the streets to catch drunk drivers.
Sgt. Wrenn says they ended up making 14 DWI arrests which doesn't include a possible arrest for Cartwright. While these numbers are high, Wrenn points to an increase in officers on patrol, saying that APD wanted to make an impact. "We're really hoping to make an impact on drunk driving, and certainly with 14 arrests being made, I think we did make an impact."
Although, he adds that with the injuries from this accident it's hard to call last night a success. "We would like to call it a successful night; but anytime we have a fatality accident involving a drunk driver, or one that causes serious bodily injury we find it hard to rejoice in it."
