Many cities across the country are looking for ways to "Go Green," but a small town in central Illinois is now leading the way in communal environmental friendliness. The City of Urbana, Illinois is ranked among the top ten cities in the nation when it comes to protecting the environment.
Urbana City Hall is leading the way with automatic light-switches which make certain the lights are off when no one is in the room.
Recycling programs and city zoning are two ways the city is striving to attract residents who wish to live a "greener" lifestyle.
Residents are allowed to install fuel-cells are small wind-turbines as an alternate source of electrical power.
Urbana may soon be the site of a new, all-inclusive "Green Neighborhood." which will use only 10 to 25 percent of the power of a normal neighborhood of its size.
This planet-friendly neighborhood will include: rain gardens to gather and use rainwater, as well as organic gardens and permeable pavement.
Urbana is continuing to set lead the way in the green crusade, in hopes that others around the nation will soon follow.
