A Texas Highway Patrol Trooper was shot Wednesday while investigating a suspicious vehicle on US 87, just west of the Eden city limits.

A DPS Trooper and two Concho County Deputy Sheriffs were investigating the whereabouts of a murder suspect for a murder which had taken place earlier that day at 2601 Jomar in San Angelo.

Information from the San Angelo Police Department indicated that the murder suspect might still be in the immediate area.

Moments later, a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper pulled over a suspicious car which was headed south down US 87 from San Angelo.

When the Trooper approached the vehicle to ascertain the identification of the driver and passenger, the passenger opened fire, shooting the officer with a 12 gauge shotgun.

The officer returned fire, striking the passenger who was later pronounced dead at the Concho County Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was unarmed and transported to the Tom Green County jail where he faces charges of Attempted Capital Murder.

The Trooper was treated at the same hospital and later released.

The Texas Rangers are continuing to investigate the incident.
