Report: Craddick Drops Bid

By: Austin Kellerman
Updated: January 5, 2009
Tom Craddick conceded his bid for Speaker of the House to throw his weight behind Representative John Smithee of Amarillo.

Craddick was moved to concede after Joe Strauss revealed he had 88 supporters ready to back his bid.

Craddick has been under fire for being heavy handed in his running of the legislature, and Strauss promised a more open, bi-partisan leadership.

Strauss could be the first San Antonio legislator to become speaker in 76 years.
