Local aerobic dance classes serve as exercise for many, but YMCA Health and Wellness Director Paul Hernandez says, "Their able to be themselves and be relaxed and goofy and just have a little fun...it takes the challenges of their day, and their able to focus on having fun, relaxing, and relieving stress."
Dance as therapy has been around for years, but now classes like Zumba and Salsa are growing in popularity. You do not have to be a gym member to bust a move in one of these classes. McMurry university offers daytime and evening classes open to the public.
McMurry Director of Kinesiology says, "People love the self-expression of dancing to music...not just a pounding repetition, but there's something relaxing about making your own stylized move."
Participants in aerobic dance classes say the classes are not only fun, but cutting a rug helps cut back stress.
YMCA, Gold's Gym, and McMurry University are some of the gyms in Abilene to offer Zumba and Salsa.
