Steroid Test Results Not Worth Cost?

By: RNS
Updated: January 13, 2009
When the state of Texas kicks off its 2009 legislative session Tuesday lawmakers will be addressing the hot-button issue of steroid testing in high schools.

The State of Texas recently started testing high school students for steroid use.

Of of the first ten-thousand tests, just four students were found to be using steroids.

Opponents of the tests say results like that certainly don't justify the program's six-million-dollar price tag. However, the lawmaker who shepherded the measure through the legislature in 2007 sees the results as proof of its success.

Representative Dan Flynn says the point of the testing program was to act as a deterrent to steroid use, and the numbers show that's just what it is.

Lawmakers will now have to decide whether to stick with the program or ditch it due to the cost.
