High school student organizations who take a little extra time and spruce up the environment could win some extra cash for their efforts.

"TRASH4CA$H", a new Don't Mess With Texas competition, is being held by the Department of Transportation. High school student organization groups will compete against others from around the state by organizing litter prevention efforts in their community.

"We have so many groups that already belong to and are an adopt-a-highway group, said Mary Beth Kilgore, the public information officer for the Abilene TxDOT District.  "These kids are very interested in this and i just really think they could go out and get something unique. That's what they are looking for, a unique project."

Groups will be judged on creativity surrounding their litter prevention efforts, getting media coverage about their projects and making a positive impact on their community. The competition also give these students a chance to demonstrate 'green' leadership.

"There are places that really need to be cleaned up," Kilgore said.  "There are really no losers. We all win as a community because if we have 10 groups that go out and decide to do something there's going to be 10 areas that are going to be clean that would not have had they not wanted to compete in this project."

Five school groups across the state will each win $1,000 to use as they like. The money was donated by Raytheon to TxDOT.
