A procedure women and doctors are buzzing about has come to Abilene.

Essure is a permanent birth control procedure that is unlike any other contraceptive procedure.  It's the only birth control with zero pregnancies in clinical trials, and it is irreversible.

Dr. Daniell is one gynecologist who offers Essure.

"It's administered by putting an implant in the tube inside the uterus, so that there's no incision, there's no general anesthetic associated with it, and it can usually be done right in the doctor's office."

He explains why women and doctors are raving about the procedure.

"There's just one charge for it in the doctor's office.  There are no incisions or burning, there's a quicker recovery time.  Most people can go back to their normal activities the next day, many can the same day."

Like any other procedure, it comes with risks.

"The biggest risk with all permanent birth control is nothing's a hundred percent effective.  The Essure is 99.8 percent.  The risks involved with Essure are a lot less than with the traditional tubule litigation."

Daniell says he has not encountered any problems yet, and all of his patients have been pleased with the results.

Essure has been in the U.S. for about 5 years and is new to Abilene.
