TYC Cuts Jobs, Brownwood Affected

Updated: January 15, 2009
The Texas Youth Commission announced it is cutting 430 positions across the state.  The cuts, effective March 1, include 19 jobs at the facility in Brownwood.

Only 100 people will be losing their jobs.  The remaining 330 are unfilled at the current time.  Further reductions will be announced in the future, said director Cherie Townsend.  That could include closing certain facilities.

The Brownwood facility is the only receiving site for female youth offenders and almost all girls in custody are in Brownwood.

The agency attributes the cutbacks to funding and to less youth in the facilities.  Misdemeanor offenders no longer go to the TYC and the maxiumum age was lowered from 21 to 19.

"The agency's youth population has decreased from nearly 5,000 in early 2007 to approximately 2,400 youth in residential settings today," it stated in a press release.
