The wind power industry continues to grow across the Big County with a new wind farm coming online with full operations. You can't miss the wind turbines that dot the horizon on the hills and in the fields of Shackelford County. Every one of these wind turbines combined make up the Hackberry Wind Project. The Hackberry Wind Project, a $350 million wind farm project, is now completed and in full operations mode. Renewable Energy Systems Americas (RES Americas) is the developer, construction contractor, operator of the project, and owner, along with GE Energy Financial Services a unit of GE.
According to the RES Americas press release, the site consists of 72 Siemens wind turbines that produce 166 MW of clean wind energy, enough electricity to power 39,000 average Texas homes. Construction on the wind turbines began in January 2008 and was completed in December 2008. RES Americas notes the project was completed on time and under budget.
Austin Energy will purchase the power produced by Hackberry, moving the City of Austin closer to its goal of securing 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
