Big Country Bridges Best In State

By: Chris Whited, KRBC News
Updated: January 20, 2009
There are nearly 50,000 bridges in the state of Texas and the ones here in the Big Country rank among the best. Earlier this month, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the states infrastructure of bridges a grade of "B-" which was up from a grade of "C-" that was given to the system back in 2004.

In the last few years, the Abilene District of the Texas Department of Transportation has received state recognition for significant progress in the improvement of bridges here in the big country. Mary Beth Kilgore, the Public Information Officer for the district told KRBC News that "about the last 5 or 6 years we have taken the states award for the maintained bridges in the state, our district. So we're just right up there with maintaining our bridges."

Kilgore also says the Big Country has some of the best maintained roadways in the state.
