Abilene Averages 1.6 DWIs Per Day

By: Laura Kellerman
Updated: January 20, 2009
DWI incidents in Abilene increased 22% from 2007-2008.

The Abilene Police Department investigated 585 arrests/incidents for 2008, up from 477 incidents in 2007.

That averages to 1.6 incidents a day.

The two "no refusal weekends" conducted by APD resulted in 12 search warrants used to draw blood from suspected drunk drivers.

"It is no secret that our department has worked "short-handed" for a considerable length of time," Sgt. Keith Shackleford said in an email.  "However, our officers are dedicated to providing a safe environment for Abilene residents. These numbers are a direct reflection of that goal."
