Local Catholics Join Fight Against FOCA

Updated: January 23, 2009
This weekend Catholic parishes in the Diocese of San Angelo and across the United States will distribute postcards to parishioners, urging them to write to lawmakers in opposition of the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)..

FOCA is umbrella legislation introduced in 2004 that aims to protect women's rights "to begin, prevent or continue a pregnancy."  If passed, it would eliminate the possibility of a reversal of Roe V. Wade.  It would also trump state laws that restrict abortion, such as parental consent or waiting periods.

"No governmental body, at any level, would be able to deny or interfere with this right, or to discriminate against the exercise of this right in the regulations or provisions of benefits, facilities, services or information," Pfeifer explained in a letter to to the diocese.  "Please contact our U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators by fax, letter, e-mail or phone to express our horror and disgust at the consequences that would result if FOCA were to be made into law."

President Obama has indicated that he would sign FOCA into law if passed in the legislature.
