Safe Driving Tips

If the roads are bad, some Abilene residents simply stay off of them. We want to may stay off the roads, but we know that's not always possible. Here are some tips from Abilene's A. OK Driving School to help local drivers stay safe.

"One of the first major things is their speed. They need to go a lot slower so that they can be able to react to have plenty of space to do that," Paula Adams, owner of A.OK Driving School said.

If you do find yourself involved in a slippery situation, it's best if you remain calm and remember this.

"If you should start to skid, take your foot off the accelerator and gently move back in the direction you were going," Paula Adams added.

Another important thing to remember is that you're not the only car on the road. Many accidents can happen by not paying attention to other drivers.

"Use low beams instead of high beams. That's all anybody thinks, you need to put them on bright so they can see better, but really the low beams are the best," Paula Adams said.

Despite the dangerous driving conditions we've seen on Abilene roads earlier this month, some residents aren't too concerned about driving in winter weather.

"Lots of close calls but I'm a yankee so I can drive on pretty bad weather if I want to," Charon Howell, and Abilene resident said.
