Local Teens Use Marijuana

By: Megan Dobbs
Updated: January 29, 2009

Marijuana use has declined among teens since its popularity in the mid 1990's...until now.

A recent study reveals a rise in the number of American Teenagers using the drug.  The survey found 11% of 8th graders, 24% of 10th graders..and 33% of 12th graders reported using marijuana in the last year.  Local doctors say that number has also risen in Abilene.

Doctor Melissa with Acadia said, "I think partly it's our culture.  Marijuana is normalized in television and films and music, so it doesn't have the stigma i think it used to have."

Other factors include depression and easy accessibility.
