Free Tax Preparation Offered in Abilene

By: Andrew Carlson
Updated: January 30, 2009
The United Way of Abilene is providing free income tax services for those who fall into a certain tax bracket.

The Community Tax Preparation Center opened this week in the first floor of the Wooten Hotel in downtown Abilene.  The center is targeting its services to lower-income families who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Twenty volunteers were trained and certified by the IRS, and since the center opened on Monday, several dozen returns have been filed.

Friday is "Earned Income Tax Credit" awareness day.  The credit allows lower-earners to receive larger refunds.

The tax center will be open through April 15.  For more information call 2-1-1.
