Abilene Mother Dead After Fire

 An Abilene father and children were able to escape their burning home overnight...A mother wasn't so lucky.

According to a press release from the Abilene Fire Department, A fire fatality occurred at approximately 2:30 this morning in a residence in the 1200 Block of Cedar. Firefighters immediately battled the blaze but couldn't beat it down for nearly an hour.

The father and children were able to escape, however the mother was trapped in a bathroom, according to the release. It is believed that she perished due to smoke inhalation. One of the children was reported to have received 3rd degree burns and was transported to Lubbock by helicopter. Two other children received minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and will soon be released.

The family believes the fire started in a bedroom. Fire investigators haven't figured out what caused the blaze quite yet.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
