Texas is the wind power leader in the nation, but environmentalists are now working to give the state another "green" title as the leader in solar power.

At the moment, the state only generates about 6 megawatts of solar energy compared to the 7,000 megawatts of wind power.

Environment Texas held several meetings across the state, including here in Abilene, to support solar bills up for debate and vote by the Texas Legislature this session.

Several bills call for a solar rebate program and for utilities to support solar technologies and offer direct incentives.

"Its really important that we do follow in the footsteps of this green session in the sense that we have seen at a national level," states Stephen Grace from Environment Texas.

"There are people who are really pushing for more green technology."

"I think it's just a representation of that and the fact that people here realize it is a necessary thing."

The group notes making Texas a leader in the solar energy revolution can bring good jobs and more clean power to our state.
