In recent weeks, the Police records here in Abilene have been full of arrests for people in possession of Methamphetamine.

"Meth is probably the biggest drug used in the Big Country," admits a former Meth addict. Although she's been clean for a full year now, she says looking back on her eight years of use it was easy for her to get hooked.

"Meth was popular so I started started using and it was easy to get addicted to." She adds that her addiction was easy to fuel because of all of the people that cook the Meth. "It's real easy to get the supplies and means to make it. And a lot of it is manufactured in this area."

Which is no secret to Sgt. David Gage, of the Abilene Police, "A lot of local people produce this Methamphetamine. We have a lot of home cooks." He goes on to explain only certain people are able to manufacture the Meth, "Not everybody can cook. Only certain people, that are very good at it and know how to do it, can because it's dangerous."

He also says getting these cooks off the streets will go a long way in stopping the drug flow in Abilene. "If we can get these people to serve some time and get them off the street, we can make an impact on the drug activity in Abilene."

Meth can really affect a persons life, too. The former addict admits that the drug really tore her life apart emotionally and spiritually. It even ruined relationships which she is working to repair. So what advice does she offer after all of this, "It's never too late to change."
