A military veteran finally received the honor he deserved for his role in a bombing mission during World War II. Just two days before his 90th birthday walter holmes was awarded the distinguished service cross this morning at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana.
He was recognized for being the lead pilot on a raid against Nazi oil refineries in romania.
Holmes originally was awarded the Silver Star, but it was upgraded to the distinguished service cross after his actions were reviewed.
It's the nation's second-highest military decoration.
