The United States and Texas continue to hold the distinction as the world and the national wind power leaders.According to a report released by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) over 83-hundred megawatts of new power capacity were brought online across the country last year. Many of those new wind farms are located right here in the Big Country. The AWEA notes massive growth in 2008 swelled the nation's total wind power generating capacity by about 50-percent.
The Lone Star State continues to lead the nation as the top wind power producing state. Wind farms in the state currently provide 7,116 megawatts of power capacity. Texas is followed by Iowa, California, Minnesota and Washington to round out the top five wind power producing states.
Top Wind Power States: (Source: AWEA)
Texas - 7,116 MW
Iowa - 2,790 MW
California - 2,517 MW
Minnesota - 1,752 MW
Washington - 1,375 MW
