Adolescence is the prime time for acne. If you have a pre teen or a teenager in your house you are well aware of the need for good skin care. Most teens are very self-conscious about their skin and whether their breakouts are mild or persistent, good face washing is essential.
Teens should begin by washing their face twice daily, just like teeth brushing. You do not need to buy fancy soaps, or skin lotions . Your local drugstore has more than enough choices to begin a good cleansing program.
Start with a mild soap free cleanser, like Purpose, Basis, or Neutrogena. If your teen's skin is a bit more oily and acne prone, try a cleanser that contains glycolic or salicylic acid. Products like Neutrogena Acne wash, or Clean and Clear. These will provide a bit of exfoliation. Have your teen use their fingers or a soft cloth to wash, don't try to scrub off the zits with a loofah!
After the morning face washing, always apply a gentle moisturizer with sunscreen daily. Look for a product that says non-comedogenic which will not cause acne but will prevent sun damage. I like Oil of Olay Complete or Neutrogena. There are many available so pick your favorite. Look for labels that say provides UVA and UVB protection as well. (
If your teen's skin seems to be getting more breakouts, you can start using a product with benzoyl peroxide after their bed time face washing. Squeeze a dime sized amount to cover the face. Always apply it to a dry face. Benzoyl peroxide products come in several strengths, and may be titrated up in strength as tolerated.
If your child is doing a good job of washing and using over the counter products but continues to break out, visit your pediatrician to discuss some prescription products that will work.
