About Jerrod Medulla
Born in Abilene, Texas and raised in the small town of Tuscola (pop.700) south of Abilene, Jerrod's strong family values are apparent with his natural "yes sir" and "no ma'am" responses when talking to any age. He is very proud of his heritage, 5th generation Texan on his Mother's side and 1st generation Texan from his Sicilian Father's side.At an early age, Medulla learned to play the drums, but would sit and listen when his grandfather would pick his mandolin. He would often join in with other family members during family gatherings. Music has always been a part of his family's life. He discovered in later years that his Great Great Grandfather hand made violins. Medulla recalls he and his brother waking up in the mornings, with songs their mother would sing while opening the window blinds.
At 19, Jerrod purchased his first guitar from the local pawnshop. From what should have been haggled for $10, however he was then the proud owner of a $99 never in tune six string guitar. Regardless, he began teaching himself the guitar and soon wrote his first song.
After high school he pursued a career choice and obtained a degree as a Surgical Technologist, from South Plains College (Covenant Hospital) in Lubbock, Texas. This was after he majored in fun and Rugby for two years at San Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.
While in Lubbock, in his serious, book cracking, learning mode, Jerrod was coaxed by friends to meet and take a break from his studies. It was a set up. It was open mic night and the next thing he knew the host was introducing him as the next act. He would only sing for a certain few at party's and had never sung in front of a large crowd. He protested saying he did not have his guitar, but his friends had thought of everything and produced a guitar within seconds. The crowd loved his story telling through his original songs. As Jerrod returned to his seat, he was then approached by a promoter asking him to perform at the Cabrito Cook-Off Festival opening for Jack Ingram, Phil Pritchett, and many more the following weekend. The decision did not need much coercing; Jerrod's career in music had begun.
While working as a Surgical Tech at Covenant hospital, Medulla played his music when and where he could. After breaking his pinky finger one evening at a local hang out, he was unable to glove into surgery. He quickly became bored with the mundane duties given to him by the hospital. Still able to perform his music at night, he kept a steady pace of gigging throughout Lubbock and surrounding areas. After a very long year of working at the hospital and with the encouragement of Christen, friends, and other supporters, he gracefully tipped his hat and tended his resignation at Covenant to pursue a musical career.
With his new career on its way, Medulla often found himself sleeping in his truck, on a cot next to his truck or on a friend's couch. He often worked two and three jobs at the same time in order to make ends meet. Needless to say, without a doubt he has truly paid his dues.
Through extreme adversity, hard work, dedication and multiple horror stories, Jerrod has earned a respected place in the Texas music scene as being a real deal grass roots songwriter.
